Domain and hosting in Malaysia: what they cost and who should own them

01Domain, hosting and email are three separate things

Many quotes bundle these together, which is why they are easy to confuse. Separating them makes it easier to see what you are paying for and what happens if you change provider.

You can keep the same domain and move hosting, or keep hosting and change email providers. That flexibility only exists if the accounts are set up clearly from the start.

02Choosing between .my, .com.my and .com

Malaysian domains ending in .my are managed by MYNIC and sold through accredited registrars. Each ending sends a slightly different signal.

• .com.my is the traditional choice for registered Malaysian companies and businesses. Registrars normally ask for business registration details.
• .my is shorter and increasingly common for local brands. It clearly signals a Malaysian business.
• .com suits brands that sell or plan to sell outside Malaysia, or when the .my version is taken.

Pick the name customers will remember and spell correctly after hearing it once. Avoid hyphens and numbers unless they are part of your brand. If budget allows, register both the .my and .com versions and point one to the other.

03Make sure the business owns the domain

This is the single most important decision in this guide. Whoever controls the registrar account controls your web address, your email delivery and your search history.

1. Register the domain in the business name, using a company email address that will outlast any one employee.
2. Keep the registrar login with the owner or a trusted director, not only with a freelancer or agency.
3. If a developer sets it up for you, ask them to transfer the account or add you as the owner after launch.
4. Turn on auto-renew and keep a valid card on file. Expired domains can be bought by someone else.

04What good hosting needs to do for a business website

For an informational business website, hosting does not need to be complicated or expensive. It needs to be fast, secure and reliable.

• HTTPS on every page, so browsers show the site as secure.
• Fast delivery to visitors in Malaysia, ideally through a content delivery network.
• Automatic backups or a version history you can restore.
• A clear answer to who restarts or fixes the site if something breaks.

Modern custom-coded websites are often delivered as static files through a global network, which keeps running costs low and removes many security updates that plugin-based sites need. Web applications with logins, databases and file storage are different, and their hosting should be priced after the features are known.

05Business email: worth setting up properly

An address like admin@yourbusiness.my looks more established than a free webmail account, and it keeps customer conversations with the business when staff change.

Email needs its own DNS records so messages are delivered and not marked as spam. These records sit on the domain, which is another reason the domain account must be organised. Ask your developer to confirm the email records after launch, especially if the website and email are with different providers.

06A short checklist before launch

• The domain is registered in the business name and auto-renew is on.
• You know where the registrar login is kept.
• Hosting terms are written down, including what is included and what renews.
• HTTPS works on the main address and redirects the other versions to it.
• Business email is sending and receiving without landing in spam.
• Analytics and search tools are registered under a business account.
