What a payment gateway actually does
When a customer clicks Pay on your website, the gateway takes over. It shows the payment options, sends the customer to their bank or e-wallet, confirms whether the payment went through and tells your website so the order can be marked as paid. The money is then settled to your business bank account after a few working days, minus the gateway's fee.
Most Malaysian customers pay in one of three ways, and a good gateway handles all of them from one account:
- FPX online banking: the customer picks their bank and approves the payment in their banking app or website. This is still the most familiar way to pay online in Malaysia.
- Debit and credit cards: Visa and Mastercard, local or foreign. Useful for customers who prefer cards or for buyers outside Malaysia.
- E-wallets and DuitNow QR: Touch 'n Go eWallet, GrabPay, Boost and other DuitNow QR wallets, popular with younger buyers on mobile.
Fees compared: Billplz, toyyibPay and Stripe
These are the standard published rates on each provider's pricing page, checked on 23 October 2026. Gateways change their rates and plans from time to time, so confirm the current figures before you sign up.
| Gateway | FPX (consumer) | Local cards | E-wallets and QR | Plan fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Billplz Basic | RM1.25 | 1.8% | 1.5% (separate application) | Free |
| Billplz Standard | RM0.75 | 1.5% | 1.5% (separate application) | RM999 a year |
| toyyibPay Standard | RM1.00 | 1.5% (RM100 onboarding and RM100 yearly for cards) | DuitNow QR, subject to approval | None for FPX |
| Stripe | 3% + RM1.00 | 3% + RM1.00 (plus 1% for international cards) | GrabPay 3% | None |
Business-to-business FPX payments, made from a company bank account, cost more on the local gateways: RM2 to RM3 per payment. If your customers are mostly companies paying invoices, check that row before you choose.
What the fees mean for a typical order
Percentages are hard to feel. Here is the fee on a single RM100 order using the standard rates above:
| Payment method | Billplz Basic | toyyibPay Standard | Stripe |
|---|---|---|---|
| FPX online banking | RM1.25 | RM1.00 | RM4.00 |
| Local card | RM1.80 | RM1.50 | RM4.00 |
| E-wallet | RM1.50 | Depends on approved plan | RM3.00 (GrabPay) |
A flat FPX fee favours bigger baskets: RM1 on a RM300 order is a third of a percent. On small orders the fixed RM1 that Stripe adds hurts more, because a RM30 order paid by FPX costs RM1.90 on Stripe against RM1.00 to RM1.25 on the local gateways. Sellers with many low-value orders usually feel this first.
How to choose the right gateway
There is no single best gateway. Pick the one that matches how your customers pay and what your business needs:
- Mostly local buyers paying by FPX: a local gateway with a low flat FPX fee, such as Billplz or toyyibPay, usually costs least.
- Buyers overseas or paying in other currencies: Stripe, or a larger Malaysian gateway such as iPay88, Fiuu or Curlec, handles foreign cards more smoothly.
- Subscriptions or monthly billing: check that the gateway supports recurring card payments, sometimes called auto-debit or auto-deduct, as these often need a separate application.
- Companies paying invoices: compare the B2B FPX rate, not only the consumer rate.
- Cash flow: compare settlement times. Some plans settle in one or two working days, others take up to a week or more.
You can also start with one gateway and change later. On a custom-built store the gateway is a connection, not the foundation, so switching does not mean rebuilding your website.
Getting approved: what to prepare
Every gateway checks your business before you can take live payments. Requirements differ by provider and account type, but most will ask for some or all of the following:
- Business registration with SSM, or personal identification for providers that accept individuals.
- A bank account in the business or owner's name for settlement.
- A live website showing your products or services with prices.
- Clear refund, delivery and privacy policies on the website.
- Contact details customers can reach: phone, email and business address.
Many applications are delayed because the website is not ready when the gateway reviews it. It helps to launch the store with policies and contact details in place first, then apply. During development the gateway's test mode lets you run the full checkout without real money.
Adding a gateway to your website with Bina Studio
The E-commerce package starts from RM899 for a storefront and order flow. Payment gateway integration is a one-time RM250 add-on: we connect the gateway you choose, test FPX, card and e-wallet payments in test mode, and make sure paid orders are recorded correctly before launch. The gateway account stays in your business name, and its per-transaction fees are paid to the provider, not to us. Standard hosting is included for eligible packages; domain renewal and third-party services are separate.
We have built over 100 websites across real estate, property developer projects, event venues, consultancies, healthcare, security and automation, education, construction and retail, from landing pages and company websites to e-commerce stores, booking systems, custom web applications and automations. If you are unsure which gateway fits, tell us how your customers pay today and we will suggest one before you apply.
