Why a food business needs its own website

Most customers find a restaurant on Google Maps, Instagram or TikTok, then look for three things before they decide: the menu, the prices and whether you are open now. If that information only lives in an old Instagram post or a blurry photo of the menu board, many will move on to the next place.

A simple website puts the current menu, opening hours, location and contact in one link. You can add that link to your Google Business Profile, your Instagram and TikTok bio, your WhatsApp Business profile and the QR code on your tables. When the menu changes, you update one place instead of five.

There is also a cost reason. Delivery apps such as GrabFood and foodpanda bring new customers, but they take a commission on every order, with the rate set by your merchant contract and plan. Regular customers who already know you can order direct through your own website and WhatsApp, so you keep more of each sale.

What a restaurant or café website should include

Use this checklist when you plan the site or brief a designer:

  • An online menu in text, not only photos, with prices, categories and clear labels such as spicy, vegetarian or best seller. Text menus load faster on mobile data and Google can read them.
  • Opening hours, including rest days and public holiday changes, shown near the top of the page.
  • Location with a Google Maps or Waze link, plus parking or landmark notes if the shop is hard to find.
  • A WhatsApp button that opens a chat with a ready-written message, for orders, catering enquiries or reservations.
  • Good photos of your best dishes and the space, so customers know what to expect.
  • Your halal status shown accurately. Only display a halal logo if your premises holds valid certification from JAKIM or the state religious authority.
  • Catering, events or private booking information if you offer them, since these often bring the largest orders.
  • Pages in Bahasa Melayu, English or both, depending on your customers.

Three ways to take orders from your website

Not every food business needs online payment on day one. Choose the option that matches how you work today:

Live payment gateway connection is added to the E-commerce package from RM250. The gateway provider must approve your business and charges its own fee on each transaction. Real-time table availability and calendar sync are quoted separately because they need more development and testing.

Connect the website to Google and social media

A restaurant website works best when the same details appear everywhere. Customers and Google both trust a business more when the name, address, phone number and hours match across your website, Google Business Profile, Instagram and delivery apps.

  1. Add your website link and menu link to your Google Business Profile.
  2. Put the same link in your Instagram, TikTok and Facebook bio.
  3. Print a QR code to the menu page for your tables, counter and takeaway bags.
  4. Update opening hours on the website and Google Business Profile together before public holidays and Ramadan.
  5. Ask happy customers to leave a Google review, and link to your Maps listing from the website.

Keeping the menu and prices up to date

An out-of-date menu frustrates customers more than having no website. Before you build, decide who will update prices, sold-out items and seasonal specials, and how often.

If your menu changes rarely, a fixed menu page that your web designer updates on request is the simplest option. If you change items every week, ask for a menu that staff can edit themselves. This is an optional addition and should be written into your quote, so you know exactly what you can change without paying for each update.

At Bina Studio, standard hosting is included for eligible website packages, so there is no monthly hosting bill for a typical restaurant site. Your yearly domain renewal, payment gateway fees and any third-party services are separate.
